Overview

Councillor Chris Darby is chair of Auckland Council’s Planning Committee, one of the three major Committees. 2016-2019 is Cr Darby’s second term as an Auckland councillor, elected from North Shore ward.

Between 2010 and 2013, Cr Darby was chairperson of the Devonport-Takapuna Local Board. Prior to amalgamation of the Auckland Councils in 2010, Cr Darby was a councillor for North Shore City Council.

A passionate environmentalist who knows the place of enterprise, Cr Darby’s key focus since 2004 has been public transport and environmental issues, including climate change. He continues to concentrate on quality urban design, place making and city design.

Prior to elected office, Cr Darby was involved in property development, with a 2004 project receiving NZIA’s Supreme Award for residential architecture. He remains a keen enthusiast for architecture, especially within public places and buildings.

Planning Committee

The Planning Committee is responsible for guiding the development and growth of Auckland, with particular oversight of the strategy and policy associated with infrastructure, housing and land use.

The remit of the Planning Committee is extensive and includes:

  • Relevant regional strategy and policy
  • Unitary Plan
  • Plan changes
  • City centre development
  • Spatial plans
  • Urban design
  • Housing policy and projects
  • Special Housing Areas
  • Tamaki
  • Regional facilities
  • Council Controlled Organisations: Auckland Transport, Panuku Development Auckland and Watercare.

 

Additional memberships

In addition to chairing the Planning Committee, Cr Darby is a member of the Appointments and Performance Review Committee and the Hauraki Gulf Forum. As committees of the whole, he is also a member of the Finance and Performance Committee and the Environment and Community Committee.

2013-2016 term

For the 2013-2016 term, Cr Darby was Deputy Chair of both the Development Committee (Committee of the Whole) and the Infrastructure Committee. He was also a member of the remaining Committees of the Whole: Budget Committee, Finance and Performance Committee, Regional Strategy and Policy Committee

Additionally, Cr Darby served as a member of the CCO Governance and Monitoring Committee; Environment, Climate Change and Natural Heritage Committee; Hearings Committee; Parks Recreation and Sport Committee, and the Unitary Plan Committee.
